FontanaArte, founded in Milan in 1881 by Luigi Fontana, was born as a manufacturer of glass sheets for building uses. In the last years of the nineteenth century he developed a refined production of furnishing objects made using glass as a raw material. In 1931 Gio Ponti was called to the artistic direction of the company, also designing some lamps including the 0024 ′ and the Bilia. Over the years it has become a leading company in the panorama of Italian design known for the processing of curved crystal and for the production of lighting equipment. From the mid-1950s we went from a limited production to a mass production: products maintain their uniqueness and in these years lamps such as Fontana or Uovo are still conceived among the company’s bestsellers. One of the most famous names is the architect Gae Aulenti. In 2016 FontanaArte was purchased by the Italian Creation Group.
