Fontana Arte, founded in Milan in 1881 by Luigi Fontana, began as a manufacturer of glass sheets for building purposes. In the last years of the 19th century it developed a sought-after production of furnishing objects made of glass. In 1931 Gio Ponti was called to the artistic direction of the company, while also designing some lamps including the 0024 and Bilia. Over the years it became a prominent company in the Italian design scene known for working with curved crystal and producing lighting apparatus. From the mid-1950s it moved from limited to mass production.
