Together with the cc-tapis team Mae Engelgeer investigates the minimalistic structure of the tatami mat experimenting with the handloom process. Natural yarns are woven around a cozy and insulating felt, dyed in signature shades, recreating the suppleness and softness of the tatami mat.
cc-tapis
cc-tapis is a company founded by Nelcya and Fabrizio Cantoni in France which has been producing carpets for 16 years, all completely hand-knotted by expert Tibetan artisans in Nepal. Raw materials, patterns and innovative weaving techniques are key parts of the success of this product. A strong respect for the materials and culture of this ancient craft is reflected in the company's ecological approach to every step of production, ranging from hand-spinning the softest Himalayan wool to using purified rainwater for washing. In 2011 the company was moved to Milan where a team of designers blend an innovative design approach with traditional production methods.
Textile design has always been at the heart of Dutch designer Mae Engelgeer’s work, from her high school days to her studies at the Amsterdam Fashion Institute and Sandberg Instituut. Since opening her own studio in 2013, she has nurtured her curiosity for the craft, experimenting within the existing boundaries of textile production to elevate old techniques to a modern stage.
Mae Engelgeer’s work embraces subtle colour palettes, patterns and linear elements. Complex compositions merge with perfection to establish harmony. Creative explorations into the contrasting of materials and textures result in works that luxurious in their tactility and dimensionality.
In addition to developing her own collections, Mae Engelgeer collaborates with brands around the world on projects ranging from textile products and furniture design to material explorations and art direction to large-scale installations and public artworks.
