The Coronado sofa, designed in 1966 by Afra and Tobia Scarpa for B&B Italia, has become an icon of evergreen design. It represents a turning point in furniture, combining an iron frame with the revolutionary technology of cold-foamed polyurethane in molds, introduced by B&B Italia in the sector. Comfort is guaranteed by a spring system with harmonic steel strips inserted into the structure of the backrest. Its sophisticated aesthetic acts as a trait d'union between the classicism of period furniture and the need for modernity, decreeing its success over time.
B&B Italia
Founded in 1966, B&B Italia is an Italian company that is a leader in the international design furniture sector, both domestic and collective. Its headquarters are located north of Milan and boasts a prestigious building designed in 1972 by Renzo Piano and Richard Rogers. Its furniture, sofas, armchairs and even outdoor products have contributed to writing the history of Italian design, spreading the “Made in Italy” on international markets. It is precisely from the alchemy between creativity, innovation and industrial capacity that modern furnishing elements emerge, highly distinctive and characterised by great quality and “timeless” elegance.
Tobia and Afra Scarpa have marked Italian design with a perfect balance between craftsmanship, innovation and aesthetic research. Trained at the IUAV in Venice, they collaborated with industry icons such as Cassina, Flos, B&B Italia and Molteni. Among their most famous creations, the Soriana armchair (Compasso d'Oro 1970) and the Coronado sofa. In addition to design, Tobia has curated architectural projects for Benetton and restorations of historic buildings. Their works, exhibited in the most important museums in the world, continue to inspire contemporary design.
