Zig-Zag, a chair designed by Gerrit Thomas Rietveld in 1934, is considered one of the first examples of a cantilevered seat. A continuous sheet of wood in the shape of an inverted Z gives life to a minimalist and balanced chair. The apparent instability hides the elaborate craftsmanship of Cassina's carpenters, especially in the dovetail joints, which make the seat firm without neglecting the uniqueness and elegance of the shape.
Cassina
Cassina was founded in 1927 in Meda (Milan) by Cesare and Umberto Cassina, inaugurating industrial design in Italy in the 1950s. The brand's identity is found in an original union where technological aptitude is closely linked to traditional craftsmanship. Cassina maintains its ancient heart, the carpentry, the linchpin of all its workmanship. It is characterised by a transversal culture of absolute quality, which makes each Cassina piece unique.
Gerrit Thomas Rietveld
Gerrit Thomas Rietveld was a Dutch architect, designer and craftsman. He was born in Utrecht in 1888 and trained as a cabinetmaker in his carpenter father's workshop. In 1918 he joined the neoplastic artistic movement De Stijl, characterized by the use of line, space and primary colours. Characteristic of Rietveld are in fact the use and processing of wood, both artisanal and elegant: many of his furniture were made with standard size strips, as Rietveld hoped they would be mass-produced, rather than hand-made.
